Music

Occasional concerts showcase the Cauffiel Organ, which is also available to students for practice, and we offer a variety of opportunities to other instrumental and vocal performers during the summer and at other times.

Once after the choir had rendered a difficult anthem Charles C. Finney (founder and pastor from 1836 - 1872) prayed “Oh Lord, we trust that Thou has understood the song they have tried to sing; Thou knowest that we could not understand a word of it.”

Commuity Jazz Worship (Currently suspended)

Jazz and worship combine, Wednesday evenings at The First Church in Oberlin. (Services are currently suspended. The description below is of the 2011-2012 academic year services.)

Wrapped in the rhythms and harmonies of jazz, the comunity worship service features song, prayer, readings and reflection. The informal melodic worship service runs for 45 minutes each Wednesday in the John Frederick Oberlin (JFO) Room of the church.

Join us to hear the divinely inspired piano playing of Michael King and heavenly vocal stylings of Tamara Fingal; both are seniors in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Utilizing readings from contemporary theologians, poets and writers, the lay-led service explores what it means to hear God still speaking.

Children are welcome in the service and childcare is available in the church nursery.

Come for worship and stay for Wednesday Night Supper
